On average, it accounts for about 12% of your utility bill. This is another investment that requires an informed decision. Capacity, efficiency, and cost are among the factors to consider.
Capacity
The first-hour rating (FHR) is the amount of hot water in gallons the water heater can supply in an hour when the tank is full. This is the most important factor in sizing your water heater. Then, of course, there is the tank size. You don't need an oversized water heater. Call Metzler’s Mr. Plumber to perform a capacity test and determine the right size water heater for your home.
Energy Efficiency
The energy efficiency of a storage water heater is indicated by its Energy Factor (EF). The higher the EF, the more efficient the water heater. However, higher values don't always mean lower operating costs when you consider the fuel sources. You should also look for a tank with at least 1.5 inches of foam insulation and an Energy Star rating.
Cost
You may want to save money with a less expensive water heater, but don't ignore the operating cost. You may save money at the cash register but pay more to the utility company.
